The Shape of Home : Stories of Arrival and Encounter

Participatory Art Exhibition

"The Shape of Home—Stories of Arrival and Encounter" aims to deepen and expand the understanding of the concept of "home" through the development of a public art project.

Starting from the individual's inner self, it extends to family members, community relationships, and further touches on connections with the neighborhood and environment, as well as the urban system. The project seeks to reveal the multi-dimensional aspects of "home" as a collection of emotions, memories, identity, and culture.

The "Shape of Home" project consists of five parts: contextual analysis of the base, participatory art activities, permanent art installations, educational outreach, and participatory visual integration. From different perspectives, the project organizes scholars, experts, artists, community members, and residents to co-create multiple viewpoints of "home" that connect culture, history, society, and the environment through artistic methods as a medium, and to re-examine the meanings of "home" and "art."

Contextual Research: Field Investigation and Local Stories

The two bases of this project, the Siwen Shoushan Community (formerly Siwenli Phase III housing) and the Huarong Social Housing (formerly Huarong Market) area, have rich historical textures. Siwenli's history includes markets, slaughterhouses, and a diverse immigrant community, while the area around Huarong Market is intertwined with Fude Yangqu and Waishuang Creek, forming a bustling street market. These complex spatial contexts and resident compositions are typical of Taipei's grassroots social structure, full of stories and often the starting point for artistic development. The project deeply explores the history, geography, culture, and natural environment of these areas, investigating the elements that shape the local identity and residents' lifestyles. This not only provides rich creative materials for art participation but also offers the public an opportunity to deeply understand the stories behind their living spaces.

Eric Chen, Ph.D. in Art from Tainan National University of the Arts, currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture at Chung Yuan Christian University, and the principal architect at ArchiBlur Lab and Co-Making Place. He has also served as a visiting professor at the School of Architecture and Built Environment at UCSI University in Malaysia. He has long explored developing a redefined scale of architecture between the body and the landscape, aiming to use the most genuine bodily sensations to repeatedly experience the fundamental values of things. This approach reexamines the role of human constructions and considers how to interact with natural ecosystems without being destructive or solely focused on human use. Instead, it actively seeks to understand and repair the environment. Through construction, he explores and responds to the coexistence and succession of life. The various forms of life accumulate different knowledge through this process, serving as an act of restoration for oneself, for life, and for the land. This approach also makes architecture a matter of the environment for both humans and non-humans.

"Flutter" focuses on the challenging issue of caregiving within a cultured society and an aging population, exploring how artistic performances can raise awareness. Utilizing the "Aqua Round Assembly Drama" theory, "Flutter" conducts workshops where participants perform their backgrounds and aspirations, their understanding of home, their conflicts, and hopes, creating connections and diverse perspectives. These stories develop into artistic texts that blend multiple forms, including drama, dance, rituals, forums, and audience participation, crafting a highly engaging stage where the audience members are not just spectators but also performers. After the performances, "Flutter" becomes the first drama therapy and drama prescription program promoted by hospitals across Taiwan.

透過《S.F.A.R.

Radio has not truly been invented yet: what we have now are only news, talk shows and music.

A sonic space - an aural environment, where sounds interact with each other, emerge from background and dissolve.

Sonic media - listening some sounds recorded elsewhere blending with the sonic space, here.

The listener - perceptual center of the world, assembling in synchronicity the fragments of fixed sounds.

Alien correspondents from the Galaxy Oreille, while exploring and collecting, have built a nomadic, internet-based local radio station, transmitting scenes and stories from Old Shilin (around Fu Jia Li) and Zhutu Kou (around Si Wen Li). Through field recordings realized by S.F.A.R. (Si Fu Alien Radio), Ear Users are welcome to enter a stochastic process of auditory imagination.

In the community, you can often see many garden-like corners, which may be balcony plants, potted plants at the entrance, or plants in containers hanging on the walls. These plants, thriving around the home, embody the vitality of the home's extension. Starting from understanding the characteristics of plants, we invite the original residents and new residents of the Siwenli base to learn about their living environment with plants. Together, they will observe and record the environmental relationships around the base. By participating in and documenting activities in the park, the evolving interactions between residents' lives and plant species, and building an ecological map, we aim to understand how to construct a non-destructive coexistence relationship through human intervention. Through plants, we explore the various life forms that make up a "home."

Our story with the environment》

Is the watershed of Fudeyang Canal still there? If it is, how do we detect its presence? What is its trajectory? and how does it relate to us? We start from field investigations, exploring together with interdisciplinary experts, and residents. By physically experiencing the paths we tread, we aim to eliminate static and singular viewpoints, emphasizing the embodiment of temporality and perception to seek knowledge and answers. Through mid-term art workshops, the public can engage with plants and earth in various forms, fostering amultifaceted connection with our living environment.

The Story between Architecture and Living》

Home is the trace left by life, where stories continually unfold through the interaction between people and the environment. We try to observe, record, and collect the fascinating traces left by these ever-emerging and swiftly disappearing stories.

I. Community Duplication: Texture collection, sensing the surprising autonomy of the environment.

II. Residential Landscapes: Photocopy-style photography, documenting the multiple aspects and landscapes of "living."

By exploring the various traces in the living environment through the simplest acts of watching and touching, these subjective experiences transform into concrete, objective records and collected results, simultaneously becoming a joint creation between us and our living environment.

《植物的家 The Home of Plants》

Combining architects (structural forms, lightweight and modular design), plant ecology experts (selection and arrangement of plant species, environmental research), clay artists (creation of plant containers and structural units), video artists (documenting the creation of works and the changes between residents and the environment), and both new and old residents as well as local organizations, we start by understanding ourselves and our surroundings. This fosters familiarity and a sense of identity, enabling the learning of knowledge and skills. Furthermore, we co-create works through the development and assembly of structures placed in daily life (such as balconies, rooms, bathrooms, etc.), establishing a process of re-establishing connections.
